During vitellogenesis the oocyte cytoplasm

Generally the somatic MK-0591 form a ligament and a thin ovary envelope. The ligament joins the ovary to the intersegmental septum (Fig. 2A,C and D). The ovary envelope, which is made up of somatic cells, tightly surrounds the germ cells in the proximal part of the ovary where oogonia and previtellogenic oocytes occur (Figs. 2 A, C–E and 3 A). When the oocytes start to gather nutrients, the envelope breaks up and the vitellogenic oocytes are no longer surrounded by a layer of follicular cells (Figs. 4 A–C and 5). Instead, the vitellogenic oocytes are usually in immediate contact with the other somatic cells that built the body organs such as the midgut, blood vessels or body wall (Figs. 2 B and 4 A). The ultrastructure of the somatic cells that form the ligament and the ovary envelope is similar. These cells are thin, form long cytoplasmic projections and their cytoplasm, with the exception of the mitochondria, is poor in cell organelles (Figs. 2 C–E and 3 A and B). The nuclei of somatic cells have an interphase organization of chromatin (Figs. 2 C and 3 A). The somatic cells are interconnected by cell junctions of the zonula adherens type (Fig. 3B). No cell junctions were observed between the somatic and germ cells.
